Umm Al Quwain has not escaped the actions of developers. Things are now changing!

Over 9000 homes and a marina have recently been built on the shores of the Khor Al Beidah wildlife area.

A massive development called Al Salam City is also taking shape on the Emirates Road. When completed, it will feature residential districts, towers, commercial units and a shopping mall.

It will be home to over half a million residents, so it will fundamentally alter the quiet little emirate of Umm Al Quwain!!

The area north of the lagoon is known for being the "activity centre" of the region with a variety of activities to suit all tastes.
Umm Al Quwain Aeroclub offers flying, skydiving, paramotoring and microlighting.

The Emirates Car and Motorcycle Racing Club hosts all types of motorsports events, including the Emirates Motocross Championships that take place here on a specially built track.

The Umm Al Quwain Shooting Club has a firing range and a 100 metre outdoor paintballing area, with obstacles to dodge around and hide behind .

One of the most popular attractions is Dreamland Aqua Park.

With over 25 water rides spread over 250,000 square metres of green, landscaped grounds, Dreamland Aqua Park is one of the biggest water parks in the world.

Adrenaline junkies will not be disappointed with rides such as The Black Hole, Kamikaze and the four Twisting Dragons.

The Aqua Play area has 19 games and attractions for the whole family.

It also has a 400 metre go-kart track and a variety of cafes and restaurants, including Saj Zaman, a Lebanese cafe. It also has a licensed pool bar and shisha majlis. Overnight accommodation is available, either in a tent or "cabana" hut.

Another popular Umm Al Quwain attraction is the adjacent Barracuda Beach Resort, which is particularly popular thanks to its well-stocked duty-free liquor store!

Umm Al Quwain was ruled until his recent death, on January 2nd 2009, by Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmad Al Mu'alla, who had been a member of the UAE's Supreme Council since 1981. The new ruler is Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu'alla. We wish him well for the future!

The emirate had 62,000 inhabitants in 2003 (making it the least populous emirate in the federation) and has an area of 750 square kilometers.

Accepted alternative spellings include Umm al Qiwain (used on its former postage stamps) as well as Umm al-Qawain, Umm al-Qaywayn, Umm el-Qiwain, and Umm al-Quwain.
