Two Lulu Islands

One Lulu Island is in Bahrain, the independent island state in the Arabian Gulf [or Persian Gulf to some people!] which has Saudi Arabia to the north-west and Qatar to the south-east.

To pinpoint it geographically, that Lulu Island is just off-shore from Manama, the capital city of Bahrain.

The second Lulu Island is a man-made island off the west coast of Abu Dhabi City, the capital of the United Arab Emirates [U.A.E].

This is the Lulu Island which concerns this particular Abu Dhabi/Dubai web-site.

So, Lulu Island, also known as Al Lulu Island is a 1050-acre man-made island off the coast of Abu Dhabi island.

It stretches from the Abu Dhabi Breakwater to the Zayed Sea Port. It is 7 kilometres in length, 3 kms of which faces Abu Dhabi Corniche.

Land reclamation was completed in 1992.

After several plans which were subsequently dropped, the island is now being developed by leading Abu Dhabi company, Sorouh, as a mixed leisure and residential project.

Lulu Island will soon be completely transformed.

It was once rumoured, during the mid-nineties, that Al Lulu Island was going to be a tourist destination for a Disney theme park, but that never materialised.

In April 2007, the Abu Dhabi government opened the island to the public.

At the time it had the following facilities:-

The government objective of the Lulu island development is to create a special world of experiences, combining entertainment with the cultural, recreational and leisure elements.

Amenities including marinas, gardens, canals, botanical gardens , children play zones, and a variety of resort accommodation are being added.

The tickets to visit the island are priced at Dh15 for adults. Children under five years are admitted free of charge.

The ticket includes the fee for a trip to the island in an air-conditioned vessel with a capacity to ferry 60 passengers, or another 25-seater ferry, which will sail every 30 minutes from the marina near the Heritage Village near Abu Dhabi Corniche.

Visitors can tour Lulu island in an open-roof train at a cost of Dh5 per person. Each trip of the 25-seater train takes around 15 minutes to complete.

To protect people from the hot sun, the island also has nearly 200 shades along its shores as well as 40 other shades scattered across its different parts.

Lulu Island is an ongoing development, with new facilities being added all the time.

It is a wonderful relaxing leisure facility for both the local people of Abu Dhabi and visitors to the UAE.

Its location, close to Abu Dhabi Corniche makes it really convenient for everyone to visit.
