Beckham will earn mega-bucks in USA

It is widely reported that David Beckham will earn 250 million dollars over five years, of which only about $6.5 million [about £3.2 million] annual salary is guaranteed.

Much of his earnings will come from advertising and other commercial enterprises involving his global celebrity status. Brand Beckham, as it is called ,will help sell football shirts, perfume and all sorts of other products.

Posh and Becks will be much in demand on the TV circuit, all the time giving them extra publicity.

Beckham claims that he has come to the USA as an ambassador for football, or soccer as it is known over there, and to promote the game amongst American youngsters.

His great interest is working with children and youths, which is why he set up his David Beckham Academy in London and Los Angeles to train and coach promising young footballers.

He says that he wants to be part of the growth of the game in America ,
following in the footsteps of famous players like Bobby Moore, Rodney Marsh, Peter Osgood, George Best and the great Pele, who all played there.

David Beckham has just left Spain's Real Madrid to join LA Galaxy. He departed on a high note, as Real Madrid won La Liga, the Spanish championship.

He has also been recalled to the England team and will be expected to fly thousands of miles to join his England colleagues, in between games for LA Galaxy. The travel will be very demanding!

Beckham's first game for the club is a friendly against English premiership club, Chelsea, on Saturday, July 24th. Chelsea are touring America, having just played Club America in Stanford, California.

The Chelsea match against LA Galaxy is already a 27,000 sell-out!

Then, David Beckham will be introduced to Latino fans with two, made -for-television, home games in the Super Liga against Mexican sides, Pachuca and CD Guadalajara. This will be followed by an away game on July 31st against FC Dallas of Texas.

LA Galaxy play in Major League Soccer [MLS] in America. Beckham's debut should come in Toronto on August 5th, when Galaxy face Toronto FC.

The tough travel schedule will continue with the following fixtures for LA Galaxy :-

Aug 9th, DC United [Washington], [A]

Aug 23rd, Chivas USA [H]

That is a punishing air travel programme [or even program] , with long flights in between games. Distances are obviously far greater in the USA and Canada than they are in Europe, let alone in individual, small countries like England or Spain.

The American newspaper, USA Today, has hailed David Beckham as America's "soccer saviour".

His presence in the US is certainly selling match tickets. New York Red Bulls have sold 30,000 for LA's visit to an arena, Giants Stadium in New Jersey, that draws an average of 10,729 for MLS games.

Beckham's first away game , against FC Dallas ,at the team's Pizza Hut Park , has almost sold out. Televised coverage of the football matches will be on ESPN, which will use a special Beckham cam, so that
viewers can follow his every movement.

Alexi Lalas, general manager of LA Galaxy, hopes that the Beckham shirt, number 23, will sell internationally, not just in the United States. The price? $79.99 or £40!

They claim to have taken a phenomenal 250,000 orders for the shirt already!! Shirts and merchandise sales are already said to be worth £10million.....around 20 million dollars!

It is understood that David Beckham also intends to bring out a range of David Beckham sports clothing and other items in partnership with LA Galaxy.

Miguel Angel Sanchez, the head of Real Madrid, estimates that Beckham was worth£300 million to Real Madrid in his time there, and that he could prove to be worth almost that much to La Galaxy. Phenomenal!

On top of all this, in one week in November, Becks will fly from LA to England for a football international and then on to Sydney, Australia for a Galaxy game, before returning to Los Angeles, California. That's more than 20,000 miles in a week!!

He is certainly in for a busy time, between everything!!

So is Victoria Beckham! Apart from bringing up her three boys, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, she has said that she would like to have a little girl, whilst she is living in Los Angeles. She said this whilst appearing on the Jay Leno TV chat show on her first full day in America.

The Spice Girls are getting together again for a world tour of 11 dates ........another demanding schedule! What are the Beckhams going to do with all this money?

However, there is one bad note concerning David Beckham's ever more lucrative career..........he has just been dropped by Gillette!!! Not surprising, since he's grown a short beard!! Even Becks can't bend that one to suit him!!
